How To Start An Online Business

When it comes to starting an online business, there are really just two options available. Either you sell your own products or sell other peoples’ products. Either way, the first step will be developing your online presence and then promoting it.  

I’m going to outline a two-step process on how you can get your online business up and running.

Do some research before you start your online businessBuild Your Online Business Website

First you have to decide on a name for your online business, get your domain (URL) name and decide where you’re going to host it. You can register a domain with such companies as Godaddy or Namecheap. They can also host your account or you can choose to host it at sites such as Word Press, Hostgator or A2Hosting.

If you already have a brick-and-mortar business that you want to extend online, you can just register your store’s name to build your brand. Hopefully the URL will be available for you to purchase. However, if you’re building your own online business from scratch, you need to think about what kind of business you’re building and what kind of products you’re going to sell and then see if there’s a domain name available that describes your product or service well.

When developing your website you can either do it yourself by using a program like WordPress or Godaddy, (content management systems) or you can hire a website designer to do the work. Creating your own website would be much cheaper. You don’t have to be a programmer, there are sites available that are specifically available to help non-techies build a website. It’s really not that hard!

Don’t worry, there are options available. One lucrative opportunity is affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing you sell other people’s products and you get a commission. These commission amounts depend of the product being offered but it’s not uncommon to see some commission amounts in the hundreds and even thousands of dollars.

Now It’s Time To Promote Your Site

The next step you need to do is to study the different marketing channels available to promote your business. You can write a press releases and blogs and distribute them to different media outlets. Get a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) program – many are free – to help rank your website on different search engines. Take advantage of social media by setting up a Face Book and Google+ page and sign up for Twitter.

You can also use pay-per-click advertising channels like Google Adwords of Bing Ads. It’s easy to set up your account and depending on how your settings, your advertisement will appear when someone does a search for your keywords. The best part is you only pay when someone clicks on your ad!

As an online business owner, you can use either SEO or PPC to launch your business. You need to know, however, that SEO takes time and you may not see sales until after the first month of continuous work. With PPC, you see results much more quickly.

This may seem overwhelming at first and yes, there is some education and training involved to get started properly.
